Deceptive Public Speakers and presenters – or just the blind leading the blind?

A disappointing deception is being perpetrated in the so-called public speaking and presenting arena. For years it’s been a (now fading, thank God) ‘norm’ for companies to have a ‘motivational’ speaker at annual marketing, sales and other conferences. Being a veteran public speaker and founding member of the National Speakers’ Association of SA (NSASA), I need to declare an interest. The purpose of this article is to 1) Alert relevant parties to the ‘canned’ nature of what they may be getting for their speaker money and 2) Hopefully save some young wanna-be speakers from going down a highly inappropriate and ‘ersatz’ road.

My opinion of the role of an authentic public speaker is that one takes a brief to get enough information to really understand the audience and the intended outcome of the assignment or conference. You then custom-craft something or ‘tweak’ an existing suitable presentation for the event and then deliver that material in an engaging, and hopefully also ‘professionally entertaining’ way.

What triggered this article can only be described as a Damascene experience. Biblical-proportion scales fell from my eyes when I realised that the majority of the self-proclaimed ‘top’ speakers around the world have moved out of public speaking into public parroting and parody. And some South African speakers are now at risk of falling into the same trap. It’s the equivalent if you will of Madonna, Josh Groban or Placido Domingo lip-synching. Why the analogy? Well, because it appears that many of these speakers learn ‘off-pat’ every single word of what they say on stage. Worse, they rehearse, memorise and do the same with every vocal inflection, movement and gesture – including the ’spontaneously’ arched eyebrow and the pregnant but utterly contrived pause.

I studied speech and drama under the eagle eye of the redoubtable Rita Maas-Phillips in Cape Town. We trainee thespians became very familiar with the genius of Constantin Stanislavsky. He was the renowned director of the Moscow Arts Theatre and the father of ‘method’ acting which was subsequently adopted – to singular effect – by discerning movie actors. Seasoned live theatre actors had long benefitted. In method acting, you ‘become’ the character. So when Daniel Day-Lewis played the lead role in ‘My Left Foot’, he would sustain his on-camera character even off-set. If you were to play Quasimodo, you would continue to walk, eat, speak and interact as you believe the legendary hunchback of Notre Dame might have. What the audience got was as we say in South Africa, ‘die ware Jakob’ the real thing, the ‘Makoya!’

It seems that inappropriate competitiveness and a desperate need for acclaim by peers and public has shifted public speaking at the top end of the (former) ‘art’, into an exercise in mimicry. Parrot-fashion learning and highly manipulative NLP-driven stage movements hold sway. I cottoned on to this when I saw one of these characters demonstrating so-called ’stagecraft’ to some fledgling speakers. Each time, he replicated the same few lines, inflections and movements with terrifying and mathematical precision. It was like watching a rewind and slo-mo replay of a sequence on TV. He proudly proclaimed that this was how he managed ‘to get a predictable and consistent result from an audience, time after time.’

This is regretfully, high-school speaking competition or Eisteddfod-type ‘memorization’. At its worst, neurolinguistic manipulation. It’s not even decent amateur acting. Because although an actor will commit to heart, her or his lines, the nuances and variations in each performance will give it memorable impact and make it art. But the parrots of the speaking circuit don’t allow themselves even that leeway. They produce a clone of their performance at function after function and at venue after venue.

All good communicating on a topic will always of course have to incorporate the ’skeleton’ on certain aspects. So yes, there may often be a degree of repetition. But it will be differently phrased and delivered each and every time because of the unique audience energy, dynamic and interaction – or, lack of it!

So why am I so disturbed by this galloping trend in the public speaking arena? Simply because it’s an absolute waste and abuse of what can, with the right mindset and understanding, be a speaking gift. When you have a good sense of the issues you’d like to explore in a presentation, you’ve got a sequence or line of thought and you’ve got your support material (if required) together, then comes the time for the real art.

The first, more commercial approach will be to source, structure the material, have a very clear sense of where you’re going and know how long the presentation or talk will take. But you intentionally keep ‘open’ your receptivity to subtle audience interaction (not necessarily spoken, but a ‘vibe’) and feedback in the form of engagement, response and so on, driving an element of your presentation. This can happen even with a typical non-interactive ‘keynote’ address.

The second – and highest form of communicating – is doing all the required prep but then trusting to the universe, God, your higher consciousness, intuition, the Ancestors, your Muse or whatever you wish to call it, to use you as an instrument to bring something special and of value to your listeners. Yes, even though it may be a business presentation, it can have an ‘edge’ that is unique and different.

When you’re appropriately ego-free and understand that you’re only ever the instrument or co-player through which such a message will be delivered – but never the sole author – then amazing, sustainable transformation can and does take place. People are affected and infected by the integrity and congruence of your message. You’ll potentially have lower demand appeal, because the undiscerning masses are mainly looking for a quick fix. And there are innumerable frauds out there just waiting to serve up their version of a ‘just add water and stir’ formula. Don’t listen to cynics who say that such integrity-based speaking, presenting or communicating isn’t possible or even desirable. Rather, talk with people for whom it is a norm rather than the exception – and explore your real speaking and presenting potential.

The role of intuition shouldn’t be underestimated. For those who respect the gift, there will be the sub-conscious ‘reading’ of energies and needs emanating from an individual or the audience. You may recall afterwards, that you used examples or analogies that you hadn’t for years. Or that you went very high disclosure on personal-experience based and therefore ‘healing’ information – because you were functioning authentically. You had prepared, you might well have rehearsed to ensure you honour the precise time allocated. But you spoke from the core of your being, knowing that it was not you alone speaking, but you in synch and tandem with the ‘Wise Ones.’ There’s nothing ‘mystical’ about this. It’s about choosing to operate at another and much more powerful level. You’ll know and feel the difference and so will discerning audiences.

There are some products that had missed the mark were those where too much emphasis was placed on fancy and crippled graphics and so on.

Consider the other point about digital photo software that often overlooked by many that the program is designed to interface with a creative skill. Photography or any kind of it can be pictured with a real eye for aesthetic value, have been captured in the digital realm. A program should always possess things like file sharing and transferring and the ability to edit and print photos in its most creative and personal ways.

Rest assured that this is something that should be fun and worthwhile. Live a life that is full of memories and joy to live-by. If you will download a photo or image, it will take sometime but well, it’s worth the time!

Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.” (Rev. 3:7-9)

Both messages were given by Messiah through the apostle John to two different Church of God congregations in what today would be modern Turkey. Unlike Jerusalem, the Jews were no major power or threat in either Gentile city.

The Sabbath-keeping Churches of God, who follow the plain truth of the Bible as taught by Herbert W. Armstrong, have always understood such scriptures about imposter Jews to refer to professing Christians who were following the false convert, Samaritan sorcerer Simon Magus:

“Simon had bewitched the people of that country, and they followed him as their leader in the Babylonian mystery religion “from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God” (Acts 8:10)…

[After being rebuked by Peter]…Simon proclaimed himself a Christian apostle, nevertheless, and called the pagan Babylonian mystery religion “Christianity.” He accepted the doctrine of “grace” for the forgiveness of sin (which the pagan religions had never had), but turned grace into license to disobey God (Jude 4). He aspired to turn his pagan religion, under the name “Christianity,” into a universal religion, to gain thereby the political rule of the world.

Simon, the “Pater” (Peter) of his counterfeit religion, did not accomplish this in his lifetime. But succeeding leaders, with the headquarters moved to Rome, did, later, gain political control over the Roman Empire and its medieval successor, called “The Holy Roman Empire.” This empire is in process of again being resurrected in Europe now!” (Mystery of the Ages, Herbert W. Armstrong).

Spiritually speaking, all truly converted Christians are spiritual Jews. Ethnic Jews and physical Israelites who reject Messiah are spiritually Gentiles. Paul explains:

“For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if the uncircumcised [Gentile] man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? [a spiritual Jew/Israelite] 27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.” (Romans 2:28).

When Yeshua mentioned the “synagogue of Satan,” Yeshua was speaking to the Smyrna and Phildelphia Churches of God in Asia Minor. He was referring to some “synagogue of Satan” opposing them there. He was not referring to Jews as an ethnic group (whom He acknowledged as literal physical descendants of Abraham and so did Paul) or to the Jewish religious authorities in Jerusalem.

Again, spiritually speaking, anybody who professes to be a true Christian is claiming to be a spiritual Jew, as Paul spoke of such circumcision of the heart. Therefore, TRADITIONAL CHURCHIANITY CONSTITUTES THE SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN — cleverly misleading the masses for a Gentilized Jesus, a counterfeit gospel, a different spirit and pagan holidays and ways of the Babylonian Mystery religion — in those days and in these days! (2 Cor. 11:4, Rev. 17:5).

Any literal, physical Israelite or Jew remains such regardless of whether they’re blind to Jesus’ identity at this time, as Paul made reference to his ethnic Jewish brethren and didn’t reject them as such, even though admitting they were enemies of the gospel. Paul didn’t once call them counterfeit Jews or synagogue of Satan or any thing like it. Instead he praised their zeal (having shared it) but said it was “not according to knowledge.” However, Paul, like true Christians, knows in God’s good time the blindness that afflicts ISRAEL (Anglo-Saxons and Northwestern Europeans) and JUDAH will be history.

Some persist in their error and state that the physical Jews in Israel today aren’t Jews in God’s sight any more since they reject the Priest-King of Israel and therefore aren’t worthy to live in the Holy Land, saying God would never give it to them.

Others compound their sin against our Jewish brethren (ethnically, tribally speaking) by refusing to believe that they’re even physical Jews, repeating the lie that they’re all Khazar converts, exaggerating claims made by those who refuse to submit to God’s Word that clearly reveals LEGITIMATE JEWS would again be living in the Promised Land of Israel, exercising sovereignty over Jerusalem, contested by the international community of fools, just before the False Prophet and Beast occupy Jerusalem.

The Bible, the inspired Word of God, calls them Jews and refers to “the cities of Judah” (not occupied “Palestinian” towns) so we should believe the Bible over men who would say otherwise, as I bring out in a Jewish Homeland.

Both Israel and Judah have been blessed because of ABRAHAM’S OBEDIENCE. Our ethnic Israelite folks, mostly professing Christians, were not denied the physical inheritances God unconditionally promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that their heirs would inherit — even though we’re acting like Gentiles. Yes, we’re Gentilized Israelites just like our pagan forefathers who rejected God’s holy days for pagan holidays.

Yet God has blessed Joseph primarily, the leader of the Northern Ten Tribes, with the United States and British Commonwealth. Likewise, God has not denied Judah a homeland despite their current serious spiritual condition that — like our Israelite countries — is in desperate need of repentance and healing or we’ll all suffer national destruction, defeat and deportation (Dan. 9:11, Malachi 4:4). God has faithfully given us the blessings He promised Abraham but now their continuance is conditional upon our obedience.

Both counterfeit Christians and jaded Jews must come to NATIONAL REPENTANCE. The Jews have rejected Jesus, blinded by their traditions, and Churchianity has rejected Jesus for their idolatrous traditions, both against the biblical traditions the Jewish apostles have shared with us (Titus 1:16, 1 John 2:4). Such blindness, in large part, was prophesied. But now that God is revealing these things, bringing it to light, exposing the darkness in traditional Judaism and Christianity, we’re to confess and forsake our sins and get back to the biblical basics, back to the Faith once delivered — so help us God — or we’ll go back into national captivity.

The good news is even if we insist upon learning the hard way, going through the “hell” of the Great Tribulation, the Time of Jacob’s Trouble, Two Witnesses will see us through the long night and help us prepare to meet our God, to receive our King: Yeshua the Messiah.

The only way to get ahead in life is to know where you want to go and keep yourself moving in that direction. Blame, shame and regret are a waste of time. “Never look back unless you plan on going that way.”

In order to move forward, you have to be aware of where you are. Are you stuck in neutral or, even worse, backsliding in reverse into the past? If you are, put on your brakes, change gears and get back on track.

How can you tell if you’re off track or going backwards? It’s pretty easy. Just pay attention to your feeling feedback. Your emotions are your strongest indication of whether or not you’re focused in the right direction. If you’re feeling angry, upset, guilty, or whatever, about something that happened last year, last month, last week or ten minutes ago, then you’re stuck in the past. And there’s no way that you can get to where you want to go from the past. To move forward, you have to start from the here and now. You must be present to change gears.

So get in touch with your feelings, but don’t stay stuck where you are. Let go of negative emotions. This includes any complaining, blaming and justifying. Let it all go. Realize that it’s over. It’s gone. It’s past. And the only reason it’s still hanging around is because you’re still thinking about it.

Now, it’s time to quit idling around and move on. But, before you can move forward, you must get out of reverse (the past), focus on your goal and change gears. Look at what you can do to either transform the situation or, better yet, just let it go and transcend it. That’s often your best bet.

The Chinese symbol for “crisis” is the same as for “opportunity.” Isn’t that interesting? So, in every breakdown, look for the breakthrough. When you’re in the middle of a “crisis,” you can change gears by asking yourself, “What’s the opportunity here?” That’s thinking in forward gear!
